WNBA basketball player Brittney Griner ended her years-long protest against the National Anthem upon her return from a Russian prison. Up until her recent international incident involving vape cartridges with marijuana in a Russian airport, Griner was well-known for refusing to stand for the Star-Spangled Banner.
Obviously, Griner’s detention and subsequent prisoner swap release for the Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout gave her a change of heart. She now says that the anthem “hits different” and she is proud to stand for it. However, she still maintains that it is an American right to protest. If she decided to continue her protest, however, the backlash would most likely be severe and overwhelming.
All of this attention, both positive and negative, surrounding Brittney Griner is still not quite enough to fill up her team’s arena. The WNBA is one of the most chronically-unwatched sports in the United States. It is only afloat because of its parent company, the NBA, infusing it with cash on a consistent and regular basis.
