The highly controversial US Agency for International Development (USAID) has been exposed for giving $8.2 million to Politico. There are a total of 236 financial transactions from USAID to Politico. Most of the money started rolling in during Trump’s first term and accelerated under Joe Biden. This is strange considering the agency has been praised for excelling in its stated goal which is foreign relations. Politico is a US-based Washington D.C. news outlet.

Such a large amount of taxpayer money going to a US news website sparks two main questions. The first question is if Politico can now be considered a state sponsored news outlet. The second question is in relation to the importance of USAID money to Politico. Shortly after the election, employees reported not getting paid. The company responded stating that it was a “glitch” and it will be fixed soon. Was the payment issue a “glitch” or was Politico relying on taxpayer money from USAID to meet payroll?
