Kendrick Lamar performed during the halftime of Super Bowl 59. The game was between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles won the game in a decisive victory 40-22, and the game wasn’t as close as the score indicates. By halftime, the game was pretty much over. There was some fanfare and hype to the halftime show, with a lot of people placing faith in Kendrick’s ability to put on a good performance. However, after Kendrick was done, people were left confused and unamused. Some people loved it, though.
Kendrick Lamar is a 37-year-old rapper from Los Angeles. He is well-known in the rap scene and popular culture to a certain extent. One of his biggest songs is “Not Like Us” which is a “diss” against megastar rapper Drake. The song got so big that Drake wound up suing his own label for the damage that it did to his career. Kendrick is signed to the same label. There was controversy before the performance due to such an inflammatory song being performed in front of the world. Any hype or excitement pretty much died out once Kendrick took the stage.
Kendrick gave an underwhelming performance that most people could not relate to or understand, as the majority of his catalogue is not known to the general public. There are a plethora of think-pieces and videos defending his performance. They point to symbolism and everything else other than the actual music. If a person needs to read some sort of primer to enjoy a music performance, than the show was probably not very good.
