Former Missouri House Rep Cori Bush’s husband, Cortney Merritts, has been charged with falsely obtaining over $20,000 in pandemic relief money. A federal grand jury has charged 46-year-old Merritts with two counts of wire fraud for allegedly attempting to acquire federal funds through deception and fraud. This is an a typical “PPP” fraud case. The allegations stem from 2020 to 2021 during the peak period of the pandemic. Merritts allegedly submitted false paperwork to the Government which resulted in him being given $20,832 in loans which were forgiven.
This is not Cortney Merritts first involvement with an allegation of unethical practices concerning money. While his wife, Cori Bush, was still in Congress, documents surfaced that showed he was paid $150,000 in one year to act as her security. Bush famously addressed the issue on television, stating that she had no other choice but to hire security because her life was consistently in danger.
If Merritts is convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison, a $1,000,000 fine, and he would have to pay back the full amount of the stolen money.
