MSNBC contributor Elie Mystal says voter registration is racist and one of many “bad laws.” Mystal has a book coming out entitled “Bad Law: Ten Popular Laws That Are Ruining America.” The laws read like a top 10 talking point of mainstream media from periods of time in the past ten to fifteen years. Things like “Stand Your Ground” from the infamous Trayvon Martin shooting back in 2012 and “Don’t Say Gay” from 2022 in which Florida banned LGBT propaganda from K-12 schools are listed.

Mystal’s issue with voter registration is that it should be automatic instead of something that people do manually. Which is a strange thing to highlight as a problem that must be solved. After all, if a person is automatically registered, then they are still registered. Manual registration points toward someone’s willingness and desire to vote. It also protects people from being disenfranchise when coupled with voter identification laws.

Mystal referenced times in the past before voter registration laws existed, saying that the only reason the system was put into place is because of free black men migrating north and voting. His argument was completely devoid of context and was clearly made to confuse the viewer. The reality is that there was a time when only white male landowners could vote. Women got the right to vote many years after black Americans.
