Florida Senate Bill 918 seeks to roll back some child labor laws in the midst of a labor shortage in the United States. This comes after Florida’s crackdown on illegal immigrant labor two years ago. The bill, if approved, would remove mandatory meal breaks on 16 and 17-year-olds. Restrictions on 14 and 15-year-olds in the workplace would be relaxed as well. They would be allowed to work “overnight” (which probably means past 11pm) and unlimited hours during the school year. Proponents of the bill say this would solve labor issues in the country while providing young people early work experience that would help them later in life.
