In 2022, Kilmar Abrego Garcia was pulled over by Tennessee Highway Patrol near Nashville for speeding. The speeding violation quickly became a suspected human trafficking case once officers noticed eight other people in the van riding without luggage or any identification. An officer on scene suspected that Garcia, who was driving, was being paid to haul the people in the vehicle to Maryland, which is where Garcia lived. The vehicle Garcia was hauling the people with was registered to a convicted human trafficker.
Fox News reporter Bill Melugin says this stop looks just like the many others he has witnessed with his own two eyes. A telltale sign, according to Melugin, is the body language of the passenger who was staring ahead like a deer in the headlights throughout the duration of the traffic stop. There is a section of video/audio that is not totally available from the tape due to a conversation with the FBI being blocked out. This conversation was about referring Garcia to ICE. The officers were told to back off and let him go. ICE never showed up.
