New York City’s Times Square has unveiled a 12-foot-tall statue of a black woman called “Grounded In The Stars” by black British artist Thomas J. Price. The statute is not of a particular person, as the artist says she can be whomever you’d like for her to be. The statue will remain in place until June 17th. The artist says the statue was intentionally placed in between two permanent statues of white men at Duffy Square to show contrast. Supporters of the statue say that they are able to relate to it and also that it is a welcome change from the usual surrounding scenery. Critics say the statue is ugly, uninspired, and far from aspirational.
