The 300-foot Mexican Navy ship “Cuauhtémoc” crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge late Saturday night. The accident claimed the lives of two of the boat’s crew and seriously injured many other people, with some still being in critical condition. No one on the bridge was injured as the collision happened between the boat’s masts and the undercarriage of the bridge. The injuries happened due to the Mexican cadets in training standing on the masts as the bridge made its way through New York City waters. Harrowing video of the masts colliding with the bridge also show human beings being flung from several hundred feet in the air to the ship’s deck or into the water. There are still questions that remain unanswered as the NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) and other groups are still investigating. As of right now, the most likely scenario that took place is mechanical failure, with the vessel’s propellers firing in reverse, sending it hurdling toward the iconic Brooklyn Bridge. Studies are still being done to determine the bridge’s integrity after the collision, but there doesn’t appear to be any serious damage there.
