An employee of the now-infamous New Orleans jail in which 10 inmates recently escaped has been arrested in connection to the jailbreak. 33-year-old Sterling Williams, a jail maintenance worker, admitted to his role in the incident. He says he cut the water to the toilet off before the inmates ripped it off of the hinges which aided them in their escape.
Williams, however, says he committed this act under duress as one of the inmates, Antoine Massey, threatened to “shank” him if he didn’t play along. This could be a simple excuse to avoid accountability, or it could very well be what happened. Ten inmates had enough time to rip a door and a toilet off of the hinges and escape one-by-one through a narrow opening in a wall. They even had time to draw a little bit of crude graffiti on the wall before they escaped.
It is feasible that the inmates threatened the worker to help them with their plan. It is also likely that the employee was in on their plan from the beginning, alongside other people including the four currently suspended jail employees.
