Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s sanitation worker strike has entered the second week of negotiations. The workers who pickup trash in Philly are currently being paid about $18 an hour. The goal of the strike is to get the city to agree to an 8% pay hike annually over a four-year contract. This would raise their pay from about $40,000 to $60,000 annually. In the meantime, the strike is taking a tremendous toll on the city.
There has been eight consecutive days of no trash pickup happening and the residents are beyond restless. Piles and piles of garbage line city streets near residential and commercial areas with no signs of letting up any time soon. There are special areas designated for people to leave their trash in the meantime, but these locations are being taken advantage of by contractors and people who live in other regions as an illegal dumping ground.
