Memorials have erupted spontaneously around the United States for Charlie Kirk, 31, the co-founder of Turning Point USA who was gunned down by an assassin while holding a free speech event in Utah this week.

A suspect, Tyler Robinson, in his 20s, was arrested and is facing a list of charges including murder, which could trigger discussion of the death penalty.

Kirk’s impact in the United States, where his fans unabashedly credit him with doing a large part of the work to put President Donald Trump in the White House by encouraging young people to support him, has been evident:
