On January 7, 2026, a confrontation in south Minneapolis between Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and a local woman escalated dramatically, resulting in the woman’s death.

The woman, identified as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen and mother of three, was fatally shot by an ICE agent during a federal immigration enforcement operation near 33rd Street and Portland Avenue.

According to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Secretary Kristi Noem, Good had been “stalking and impeding” officers throughout the day. When agents approached her vehicle, she allegedly refused commands to exit, reversed her SUV, and then accelerated forward, weaponizing the vehicle in an attempt to run over an officer. DHS described this as an “act of domestic terrorism,” stating the agent fired in self-defense, fearing for his life.

Bystander videos circulated widely, with some angles shared by President Donald Trump on Truth Social, appearing to show the vehicle veering toward the agent before shots were fired. The SUV subsequently crashed into a parked car and a light pole.

However, local officials and eyewitnesses disputed the federal narrative. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz called the DHS account misleading, asserting that video evidence showed the agent was not directly in harm’s way when he fired multiple rounds through the car window. Eyewitnesses described Good as attempting to maneuver away rather than deliberately assaulting officers, with some claiming she posed no immediate threat.

The incident sparked protests in Minneapolis, clashes with federal agents, and preparations for National Guard deployment amid rising tensions. The FBI has taken over the investigation.

This event marks a contentious start to renewed immigration enforcement efforts under the Trump administration, highlighting stark divides in interpretations of the use of force.
