Joe Kent Resigns as National Counterterrorism Center Director Amid Controversy Over Iran War

On March 17, 2026, Joe Kent, the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC), announced his immediate resignation from the position he held under the Trump administration. The move marks the first high-profile departure from the administration explicitly tied to opposition against the ongoing U.S. military involvement in Iran, now in its third week.

Kent, a retired U.S. Army Special Forces veteran (Green Beret) with 20 years of service including multiple combat deployments, and a former CIA paramilitary officer, was appointed to lead the NCTC in 2025. He also served as a close aide to Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. Known for his long-standing support of Donald Trump and his alignment with “America First” foreign policy principles emphasizing restraint in overseas interventions, Kent’s resignation has sent shockwaves through political and intelligence circles.

In a public resignation letter posted on X (formerly Twitter) addressed directly to President Trump, Kent stated:

Kent further accused the administration of being influenced by a “misinformation campaign” from Israeli officials and parts of the American media, drawing parallels to intelligence leading up to the Iraq War. He urged Trump to “reverse course” and emphasized the human cost, noting he could not support “sending the next generation off to fight and die in a war that serves no benefit to the American people nor justifies the cost of American lives.” Kent also referenced the 2019 death of his wife, Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Shannon Kent, killed in a suicide bombing during a special operations mission in Syria, underscoring his personal stake in avoiding unnecessary conflicts.

The resignation highlights emerging fractures within the Republican coalition and the broader MAGA movement over foreign policy, particularly regarding U.S. involvement in the Middle East and relations with Israel. Analysts have described it as a potential signal of deeper divisions among Trump’s anti-interventionist base.

President Trump responded dismissively, calling Kent’s departure “a good thing” and describing him as “very weak on security.” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt criticized the letter as containing inaccuracies and suggested Kent had not been actively involved in key briefings for some time.

Other administration figures and supporters pushed back strongly. Some reports noted Kent’s history of controversial associations, with critics labeling his views as echoing isolationist or even fringe elements within the right. Former officials and experts challenged his claim that Iran posed no imminent threat, arguing it contradicted longstanding intelligence assessments.

Kent’s departure comes at a sensitive moment for the administration amid the escalating Iran conflict. It remains to be seen whether it inspires further dissent or remains an isolated protest. Kent has upcoming media appearances, including a scheduled discussion with Tucker Carlson and a potential interview with Mark Levin, where he is expected to elaborate on his position.

As the war continues, Kent’s resignation serves as a stark reminder of the tensions between campaign promises of avoiding “endless wars” and the realities of governing amid international crises.
