New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s wife, Rama Duwaji, the 28-year-old Syrian-American artist serving as the city’s first lady, has come under intense scrutiny following the resurfacing of her old social media posts and interactions. The couple married in early 2025, shortly before Mamdani’s successful mayoral campaign.
A March 18, 2026, investigation by The Washington Free Beacon revealed posts from Duwaji’s teenage years and early 20s (roughly 2013–2017) on now-inactive X (formerly Twitter) and Tumblr accounts. These included praise for Palestinian terrorists affiliated with the U.S.-designated terrorist group Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). In a 2017 Tumblr post under the username “diimashq,” she shared a photo of Leila Khaled—a notorious plane hijacker—with the caption: “If it does good for my cause, I’ll be happy to accept death.”
Other examples include a 2015 X post hailing Shadia Abu Ghazaleh, a PFLP militant involved in attacks, on International Women’s Day, and reposts glorifying “valiant freedom fighters of Palestine” during the First Intifada. She also wrote “F**k Tel Aviv. Shouldn’t exist in the first place. They’re occupiers,” criticized U.S. soldiers as “mercilessly slaughtering 3rd world civilians” to maintain “American hegemony,” and claimed “White people” created Al-Qaeda. One 2013 post used the N-word.
Duwaji deactivated her old X account (@_RamaDee) shortly after the report surfaced. The accounts were linked to her via personal details like her name, birthday, pet cat, and locations in Syria, Dubai, and Texas.
Additional backlash stems from more recent activity. In 2024—prior to her marriage—Duwaji allegedly “liked” Instagram posts celebrating the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack as “breaking the walls of apartheid” and labeling The New York Times’ reporting on sexual violence during the assault a “mass hoax” or “fabricated.” She also liked content supporting anti-Israel protests the day after the attack.
Mayor Mamdani has repeatedly described his wife as a “private person” with “no formal position” in his campaign or City Hall, stating her views are not his responsibility and that he must represent all New Yorkers. Duwaji has not publicly commented, and her representatives did not respond to requests for comment.
The revelations have fueled public debate, with some calling for greater accountability for public figures’ spouses and prompting an Israeli ministry to recommend barring Duwaji from entering the country. As first lady, her past online footprint continues to draw attention amid ongoing Israel-related tensions in New York City politics.
