IOC Bans Transgender Women from Women’s Events at the 2028 Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has officially barred transgender women—biological males who identify as women—from competing in women’s categories at the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics and all future IOC-sanctioned events. The new eligibility policy, announced on March 26, 2026, limits participation in female events to biological females, verified through a one-time genetic test for the SRY gene, which determines male sex development.

This marks a significant shift from previous IOC guidelines, which since 2004 had allowed transgender athletes to compete in women’s events if they met testosterone suppression thresholds set by individual international federations. Under the updated rules, anyone who has undergone male puberty is excluded from the women’s category due to retained physical advantages in strength, speed, muscle mass, bone density, and cardiovascular capacity that hormone therapy cannot fully eliminate.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry emphasized that the policy prioritizes “fairness, safety, and integrity in the female category.” The decision follows extensive scientific review by IOC medical experts, who concluded that male puberty confers permanent advantages that undermine fair competition for biological women. It also aligns with U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order aimed at keeping men’s advantages out of women’s sports, especially relevant as Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Games.

The move has been welcomed by many athletes, coaches, and women’s sports advocates who argued that allowing biological males to compete displaces female athletes and erodes the purpose of sex-segregated categories, which exist precisely because of average performance gaps between males and females. Critics of the prior framework pointed to cases where transgender athletes outperformed women in various sports, raising concerns over lost scholarships, podium spots, and safety in contact events.

While the policy has drawn opposition from some activists who view it as exclusionary, the IOC’s stance reflects a growing international consensus across sports bodies to protect women’s divisions based on biological reality rather than gender identity. No openly transgender woman has medaled in Olympic competition to date, but the ban ensures the women’s category remains reserved for real women—those born female.

The 2028 Olympics will thus proceed with clearer boundaries, reaffirming that elite female sport is defined by sex, not self-identification. This development is expected to influence national governing bodies and lower-level competitions worldwide.
