U.S. F-15E Strike Eagle Shot Down Over Iran; Search Continues for Missing Airman

In a significant escalation of the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict, Iranian forces shot down a U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet on Friday, April 3, 2026—the first American warplane lost to Iranian fire since the war began nearly five weeks ago.

The two-seat F-15E, believed to be from the 494th Fighter Squadron based at RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom, was operating over southwestern Iran (reportedly in the Khuzestan or Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad provinces) when it was struck. Both crew members—the pilot and the weapons systems officer—successfully ejected from the aircraft.

U.S. forces quickly launched a high-risk search-and-rescue operation. One crew member (identified in multiple reports as the pilot) was located and rescued by U.S. military helicopters. However, the second airman—the weapons systems officer—remains missing as of Saturday, April 4. Search efforts continued into a second day, with U.S. and possibly Israeli special forces involved in the operation on the ground or in Iranian airspace.

Iranian state media and officials claimed responsibility for downing the F-15E and have urged civilians to assist in locating the missing American, reportedly offering rewards for information or capture. Tehran has also asserted it engaged additional U.S. aircraft during the incident, including an A-10 Warthog supporting the rescue mission, though U.S. officials have not fully confirmed those details. During the rescue effort, at least two U.S. helicopters took small-arms fire, resulting in injuries to crew members, but all returned safely to base.

The incident has heightened tensions in the broader conflict, which has centered on Iranian military capabilities, regional alliances, and control of key waterways like the Strait of Hormuz. U.S. officials have described the event as a setback but emphasized ongoing operations to recover the missing service member. No official word has emerged on the airman’s status—whether still evading capture, injured, or otherwise.

As the search presses on amid a race between American and Iranian forces, the episode underscores the risks of sustained aerial operations deep in hostile territory. Further updates are expected as the situation develops.
