In a high-stakes mission deep inside Iranian territory, U.S. special forces on Sunday, April 5, 2026, successfully extracted the second crew member of an F-15E Strike Eagle fighter jet that was shot down by Iranian forces two days earlier. The rescue brought a tense 48-hour search-and-rescue operation to a close, with President Donald Trump announcing the news via Truth Social, declaring simply, “We got him.”

The incident began on Friday, April 3, when the two-seat F-15E was struck—reportedly by a surface-to-air missile—over southwestern Iran, likely in the Khuzestan province or nearby mountainous terrain. Both the pilot and the weapons systems officer (WSO) ejected safely. The pilot was located and rescued within hours by U.S. forces. The second airman, a highly respected Air Force colonel serving as the WSO, remained missing and evaded capture while injured. He hiked to a remote mountain crevice, activated his emergency beacon, and survived behind enemy lines for nearly two days.

U.S. officials described the rescue as complex and perilous, involving special operations forces (with reports citing possible involvement of SEAL Team 6), CIA support, deception tactics, and overhead air cover. Earlier rescue attempts faced ground fire from Iranian forces, including damage to a U.S. Black Hawk helicopter. Despite the risks, the colonel was safely recovered and is expected to recover fully from his injuries. He has since been moved to a medical facility outside the combat zone.

The operation unfolded amid escalating U.S.-Iran tensions, including Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz and broader regional conflict. Israeli officials reportedly delayed planned strikes to avoid interfering with the search. President Trump later used the successful rescue to reiterate threats against Iranian infrastructure if Tehran does not reopen the strait by his stated deadline.

Military analysts have praised the airman’s survival training and evasion skills, as well as the professionalism of the joint U.S. military-CIA team that pulled off what some are calling one of the most daring combat rescues in recent memory. No names of the crew members have been publicly released for security reasons.

The successful recovery of both aviators underscores the U.S. military’s commitment to leaving no one behind, even in hostile territory. As the situation in the region remains fluid, this episode highlights both the dangers faced by American service members and the extraordinary lengths taken to bring them home.
