In a bombshell report published on April 10, 2026, CNN revealed that four women have accused Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) of sexual misconduct, including one former staffer who claims the congressman raped her while she was heavily intoxicated.
The most serious allegation comes from a former staffer who told CNN that Swalwell assaulted her in 2024 after a charity gala in New York. She described being left bruised and bleeding following the alleged incident, which she says occurred when she was too intoxicated to consent. CNN reported that the woman provided corroborating evidence, including text messages, medical records, and accounts from people she confided in at the time.
Three additional women described other forms of misconduct to CNN’s investigative team. Their claims include unwanted physical contact, intoxicated encounters, and Swalwell allegedly sending unsolicited explicit messages or nude photos. The network noted that key details in each woman’s account were corroborated through documents and contemporaneous witnesses.
Swalwell, a leading Democratic candidate for California governor, has vehemently denied all the allegations. In a statement, he called them “false and outrageous,” claiming they were politically motivated and timed to damage his campaign just weeks before the primary. “For nearly 20 years, I have served the public… and have always protected women,” he said. “I will defend myself with the facts.” His campaign and legal team have issued cease-and-desist letters to at least two of the accusers and threatened legal action.
The allegations have triggered immediate political fallout. Some Democratic allies and endorsers have called on Swalwell to drop out of the governor’s race, and several prominent figures have withdrawn their support. The congressman remains in the race as of April 11, 2026, insisting the claims are lies designed to derail his candidacy.
The CNN investigation is the latest development in a story that first surfaced through rumors on social media and earlier reporting by the San Francisco Chronicle. Swalwell has not been charged with any crime, and the allegations remain unproven in court.
