President Donald Trump has signed an Executive Order to dismantle, and ultimately abolish, the Federal Department of Education. Trump cannot completely eradicate the agency without Congressional approval. He has, however, already cut 50% of the workforce by effectively eliminating nearly 2,000 jobs from the agency by way of layoffs or early retirements and resignations. The efforts to slim down the DoE are in line with an overall effort to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse in the Federal Government.

The ultimate goal is to allow State Departments of Education to operate without the Federal Government breathing down their necks. The main purpose of the Federal DoE that may leftists are concerned about losing is doling out monies for student loans and Pell Grants. It has been widely reported that responsibility for that will potentially be taken over by the Department of Treasury. The Federal DoE is a thorn in the side of many state Governors due to the overreach and unfunded mandates that do not actually help the students perform better.
