The President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, met with President Donald Trump in the White House on Monday. The two leaders spoke about a variety of issues, including the hot topic of Kilmar Garcia, the migrant who was “mistakenly” deported back to El Salvador. Garcia is suspected of being an MS13 gang member and he was in the United States illegally. Deportation proceedings against him were initiated back in 2019. Throughout the Biden administration, however, the deportation process was blocked from taking place. In 2024, a judge ruled against deporting Garcia because he would face retribution from gangs. Since Garcia was deported despite the court order, the deportation is being characterized as a mistake.

United States Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller was in the room during the Bukele / Trump meeting. He stated that Kilmar Garcia was not mistakenly deported. He is a citizen of El Salvador, not the United States, so he is where he’s supposed to be. Also, there is no way to “facilitate” the “return” of Garcia into the United States because that is solely up to the discretion of El Salvador. Nayib Bukele says that there is no way he could or would smuggle a terrorist back into the United States. He also has no plans of releasing him from prison and allowing him to live freely in El Salvador. The famous prison camps El Salvador has are a response to the rampant crime and violence that nation had suffered for years and years.
