Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson’s Staff Cuts Short Interview on Surveillance Cameras After Nearby Shooting

Seattle, WA — In a tense exchange captured on video, staff for Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson abruptly ended a KOMO News interview on Thursday after reporter Chris Daniels pressed her about the city’s surveillance camera policies in the wake of a shooting outside one of her public events.

The incident occurred as Wilson addressed the public for the first time about gunfire that erupted Tuesday near a community gathering she attended, forcing her to be rushed to safety. No one was injured, and authorities said there was no indication the shooting was targeted at the mayor.

Daniels asked Wilson whether the violence had changed her views on expanding the city’s network of CCTV cameras, which she has long criticized. Wilson, who campaigned on limiting surveillance to protect privacy and vulnerable communities, paused the expansion of the pilot program shortly after taking office in January 2026. She ordered a data and privacy audit while keeping the existing 62 cameras operational.

As Wilson began to respond, a staffer stepped in and interrupted. “I appreciate it, but let’s keep it on topic, OK?” the aide said, later adding, “We just need to keep it within the constraints of the event itself.” Daniels pushed back, replying, “It looks worse when you jump in like that.”

Wilson later returned to the question, stating that the shooting had not altered her position. “Not really,” she said. “I believe that CCTV cameras have an important role to play in our public safety system, and we also have to be very careful to make sure that our data storage, security, [and] sharing practices don’t make that system vulnerable to misuse or abuse.” She cited concerns about potential access by federal immigration authorities or other actors.

The mayor has faced growing criticism from both sides: progressives who say she has softened her anti-surveillance stance by keeping cameras active, and public safety advocates who argue the city needs more tools to combat rising gun violence.

Wilson’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the interview interruption. The episode, which quickly spread on social media, has renewed debate over transparency and accountability in the mayor’s young administration.

Seattle continues to grapple with debates over balancing public safety, privacy, and effective policing as Wilson marks her first 100 days in office.
