Spirit Airlines Ceases Operations After 34 Years, Stranding Passengers and Ending Ultra-Low-Cost Era

Spirit Airlines, the budget carrier famous for its bright yellow planes and no-frills fares, abruptly shut down all operations on May 2, 2026, marking the end of nearly 34 years in the skies. The airline announced an “orderly wind-down” effective immediately after running out of cash and failing to secure a last-ditch $500 million government lifeline from the Trump administration.

All flights were canceled, with the carrier’s final departure—flight NKS1833 from Detroit to Dallas-Fort Worth—touching down just after midnight. Passengers were urged not to go to the airport, and customer service lines went silent. Thousands of travelers found themselves stranded, and roughly 17,000 employees faced sudden job losses.

The collapse came after years of financial turbulence. Spirit filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection twice in less than a year—first in November 2024 and again in August 2025—while battling high fuel prices, engine issues, and weak demand. A planned $3.8 billion merger with JetBlue was blocked by antitrust regulators in 2022, further weakening the carrier. Surging jet fuel costs tied to the 2026 Iran conflict delivered the final blow, derailing a restructuring plan that had aimed for an exit from bankruptcy by early summer.

Efforts to save the airline, including talks with JetBlue and American Airlines, and even a proposed use of the Defense Production Act, ultimately failed. A 15-minute phone call between Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Spirit CEO Dave Davis sealed the decision to let the carrier liquidate.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy quickly announced assistance measures for affected passengers, including rebooking help on other carriers and guidance on refunds. Those who booked through third-party agencies or used Spirit credits and loyalty points will need to navigate the bankruptcy process for reimbursement.

Industry watchers note that while Spirit’s ultra-low-cost model drew plenty of criticism for its extra fees, it forced competitors to lower prices and opened air travel to millions who might otherwise have stayed grounded. Its departure is expected to reduce capacity on many leisure routes and could lead to higher fares in the short term.

For now, the skies are a little less yellow—and a lot less cheap.
